REQUIREMENTS FOR EFFICIENT BIODEGRADATION OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS

Efficient and complete biodegradation requires a community of microorganisms working together where the by-products of one's metabolism serve as food for another organism. Lack of even one member of the microbial team will decrease treatment efficiency.

Organic substances are only a source of carbon for the microorganisms; nitrogen, phosphorous and many minor elements are also essential for the pollutants to be biodegraded. Sufficient oxygen and/or an alternative electron receptor and pH 6.0-8.5 are also necessary. Adequate equalization is important to minimize fluctuations (e.g. hydraulic, toxic and/or loading).

WHY THE BACTA-PUR® SYSTEM IS EFFECTIVE

Each waste water treatment system is a unique combination of equipment, influent quality and operational procedures. Use of the Bacta-Pur® System starts by defining certain physico-chemical and biological realities of the existing system; the Bacta-Pur® WWTP questionnaire (brochure: q01) is filled out. This information is then analyzed by the biological and engineering staff of IET–Aquaresearch Ltd. to select the most cost-effective physico-chemical and/or biological means to optimize treatment efficiency.

Bacta-Pur® XLG contains a community of non-pathogenic microorganisms selected for their synergistic ability to biodegrade organic pollutants. Bacta-Pur® XLG is one of the most concentrated products of its kind; the guaranteed minimal cell count exceeds 10 cells/ml, which is more than 1000 times other brands. The advantage of the Bacta-Pur® System does not stop there. Our preactivation techniques of on-site growing and physiological engineering (brochure: spd10 for automatic preactivation) increase the population at least ten times and assure that

the microorganisms are in exponential growth upon addition, and the concentration of the preactivated microorganisms is up to a million times more concentrated than background levels of microorganisms in untreated WWTPs.

BOD REDUCTION WITH BACTA–PUR®

Small regular doses of Bacta-Pur® XLG are very effective. Best results will be achieved by introducing Bacta-Pur® XLG into the influent of the waste water treatment system. When necessary Bacta-Pur® INDUSTRIAL NUTRIENT PACKAGE can be used to assure the presence of essential minor nutrients for efficient biodegradation. THE BACTIVATOR EXPLAINED

The Bacta-Pur® BACTIVATORs contain four principal components, which are mounted on a plastic pallet for shipping and use: (1) reservoir(s) for the microorganisms and nutrients, (2) multi-step bioreactor(s), (3) panel holding the water filtration, conditioning and flow control equipment, and (4) electrical control box.

  1. The reservoir(s) contain a supply of Bacta-Pur® beneficial biotechnologies and nutrients. Floating spheres minimize air contact and destabilization of the bacteria and nutrient mixtures. Dosing pump(s) transfer the bacterial/nutrient mixture to the bioreactor. Low level float switch(es), within the reservoir(s), send a signal to and light a red indicator light on the electric control panel when the reservoir needs to be refilled. The switch also cuts the current to the peristaltic pump.
  2. The bioreactor(s) have internal compartments or growth chambers, with aeration. The first contains an immersion heater and receives the incoming bacteria/nutrients and water. This compartment serves to bring the bacteria out of dormancy and to begin their growth. The culture water overflows into the bioreactor container, which serves as the second and largest of the growth chambers. The bacterial culture then leaves the compartment to be fed into the waste water treatment system.
  3. The water treatment and flow control panel contains an activated carbon filter and a flow control meter. City water is simply connected to the filter, which removes residual chlorine and large particles. The flow of incoming water is easily controlled by opening or closing the valve on the flow meter.
  4. The electrical control box contains all the circuits and the breaker for the system. The unit is CSA approved. The main power switch (green light) and the low level indicator (red light) are found on the cover of the electrical box.

The Bacta-Pur® BACTIVATOR has been designed and built to operate during a long periods of time with a minimum of maintenance.

BOD Reduction with Bacta–Pur®

The Bactivator Explained

The Bacta-Pur® BACTIVATORs automatically perform the following operations:

  • Grow the bacteria to increase their numbers;
  • Physiologically engineer or condition the microorganisms to be in a rapid phase of growth prior to their addition to the waste water treatment system;
  • In the preactivation mode of operation, optimize the synthesis of enzymes to solubilize grease, protein and/or sludge, and
  • In the preconditioning mode of operation, induce the bacteria to synthesize the internal enzymes to biodegrade refractory products such as site-specific hydrocarbons.

The Bacta-Pur® BACTIVATORs are designed to be simple to use to save operator time and money as well as to help optimize waste water treatment efficiency.
